PRESERVING THE SEA FROM ABOVE

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Australia generated 76 million tonnes of waste, 10% increase since 2016 - 17. 539,000 tonnes of e-waste generated:

Around 40% contributed by households, half of that was recycled

One of my self-initiated projects was the "Preserving the Sea from Above" campaign, which addresses the environmental impact of deep-sea mining. As a growing industry, deep-sea mining highlights the global lack of environmental progress. Metals and minerals such as manganese, nickel, copper, and cobalt—essential for batteries in our phones, laptops, and electric cars—are depleting land resources, pushing companies to explore deeper waters. However, the methods used for resource extraction lead to significant water pollution, contamination, and adverse effects on marine ecosystems.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about these environmental pressures and encourage proactive choices to mitigate damage. By educating the public on the importance of recycling old devices and batteries, we can reduce the need for deep-sea mining and protect our oceanic ecosystems. The goal is to promote sustainable practices and share this crucial knowledge to foster broader community awareness and action

Size and distribution of mining areas - Discharges to water - Spreading of particles - Light pollution - Spreading of contaminants - Noise, electromagnetic radiation and vibrations - Thermal pollution
